what it’s like having a broken foot

It’s really lame! Like, I knew mostly as soon as my foot still hurt too much to walk on the morning after I stepped on it weird that I’d probably be wearing one of the funny boots for a while and maybe using crutches, but… well, I sort of expected it to be at least a little bit of a bigger deal than it is! Like, oh, I have to put on a big boot in the morning. Who cares. When I went to the weekly LGBTESCREAL Seattle dinner I brought both of the crutches just because, you know, I was probably going to be doing thirty or forty minutes total walking to navigate the transit system to get there, and maybe if I put that much weight on the bad foot it’d add up and start causing issues, and at that point I’d be screwed if I didn’t have the crutches, so I might as well bring them and try to keep as little weight on the foot as possible. But look, I’m pretty sure I’d’ve been fine if I only took one crutch, or even if I wore only the boot, and it’s not like I’d even had a long time to recover by then or anything, that was Saturday evening and the minor fracture happened Thursday afternoon. I’m not sure I even need the boot at this point though of course I will continue using it for another few weeks nonetheless. I left the house for the first time with only one crutch today just to like see if it would go as hitchlessly as I anticipated and indeed it did, so probably I will be doing the solo crutch strategy for a little, but honestly in another week I will probably stop bothering. The whole thing is really bizarre. When I went to get food today the lady at the fast food counter was like “I’ll get your drink for you instead of having you use the fountain yourself, since you’re disabled” and I mean good on her that’s a perfectly reasonable course of action when you see someone in a crutch but like from my perspective I mean come on. I didn’t even really need the crutch I just use it out of caution and in case not using it would aggravate the issue, but the doctors said it’s fine to just walk in the boot as much as pain allows, by which they meant — I made sure to clarify this point — that actually it’s totally safe for me to walk on my foot in the boot even if it does hurt, but if it hurts badly enough I might prefer not to. So like I’m going around using crutches that the doctors didn’t even particular order me to use (though the doctors did provide me with them so maybe it was sort of implied that I might use them) and the fast food counter lady is worrying about me and Celene is consoling me all overdramaticlike about the “intense pain” I’m in and looking up whether I can be euthanized11 She might have been trolling me, I never can tell with her. and it’s just like, come on, I guess when I step on the foot weird while on a hill it maybe hurts very slightly but you know it experience substantially worse pain all the time.

So like I don’t actually wish it were any worse than this to be clear. This is like the ideal outcome. I am very grateful I am not injured any worse than this. But also like I don’t know come on I always sort of imagined that breaking a bone would be a bigger deal than this or something.

  1. How exactly does the boot help and what does it feel like to move from not wearing the boot to wearing the boot

So last Friday when I tried to walk to the car so I could be driven to get an x-ray my foot hurt a ridiculous amount to the point where I had to like sit on the ground for a while and hop on one foot and it was awful. With the boot I can just walk, it's fine. But also it's entirely possible that by this point I could also walk fine without the boot? My guess is that at any rate it'd be substantially less bad than a week ago. But I'm not checking whether that's in fact the case, because it could worsen the injury.

  2. Oh, there's one thing that's actually rather annoying: taking a shower with a bad foot seems ill-advised, so I have to do baths. And baths are mostly not too bad, really, but furthermore I need to get in and out of the bath while minimizing weight on the foot, and that is in fact bothersome.

    1. I also walk around a little slower I guess
